What is Heliotherapy? (Psoriasis sun exposure)

The use of heliotherapy began a long time ago when it was used in India, China and Egypt to treat diseases, including psoriasis. Ancient Greeks also used natural sunlight as therapy.

Heliotherapy exposes the body to sunlight to help heal disease and is beneficial for increasing energy, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood cholesterol and increasing resistance to infection.  Dermatologists use heliotherapy for the treatment of acne, psoriasis and other skin problems and while natural solar radiation is the preferred method artificial light may also be used.

Heliotherapy is a method that uses the sun’s ultraviolet waves to enhance the production of vitamins and nutrients in our skin and body in a process we really need.

The recommended dose of sunlight should not allow the risk of sunburns. Practicing this method in small doses is recommended.
Heliotherapy can be used as a natural antibiotic, as stress reliever or as a way to enhance your immune system. If Heliotherapy is practiced early in the morning, more specifically before 9:00 am, for at least 20 minutes, it can assist in wound healing as well as the elimination of microbes from the skin.
As a chiropractic treatment, heliotherapy is used for muscular stimulation and relaxation and can help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) caused by sunlight deprivation during the dark winter months.

While fully recognizing that long term overexposure to the sun and burning can result in skin cancer, premature aging and wrinkling in some cases, the science of heliotherapy supports that the sun also offers many benefits.
